All ITS staff members are welcome to participate in this program. The program encourages staff (or anyone interested!) to experiment with new technologies that are continually reshaping the internet and the ways in which information is dispersed and accessed.
The program is borrowed (with permission) from the Learning 2.0 program that was designed by Helene Blowers, PLCMC Technology Director, and is loosely based upon Stephen Abram's article, 43 Things I (or You) might want to do this year (Information Outlook - Feb 2006) and the website 43Things.
The program is built entirely by using the web 2.0 tools that we'll be exploring through the 23 things. All tools are freely available on the internet.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How does this online learning program work?
This is a self-discovery program which encourages staff to take control of their own learning and to utilize their lifelong learning skills through exploration and PLAY. There will be no classes or workshops offered to support this program; however, there will be a celebration and discussion at the end of the program. Staff are encouraged to work together and share with each other their discoveries, techniques and "how to's" both in person and through their blogs.
What if I need help--who can I contact?
Since this program is self-directed and is being completed by staff members simultaneously, you are encouraged to work with colleagues along your discovery journey. To find a list of staff participating see The Participants (the link for this will be activated after staff members have completed step 4). If you are stuck, please send me, Bethany, an email.
Is the program open to anyone?
This program is part of the summer workshops for Learning Resources and Technology Services staff. Again, all ITS staff members are welcome to participate in the program. Of course, anyone can follow along and complete the steps on their own.
How long do I have to complete the program?
The program "officially" begins Wednesday, June 6th. Suggested completion date is Wednesday, August 8th (complete by then to get a new ITS shirt). Staff will be participating in a celebration/discussion session of the 23 Things on Friday, August 10th.
How do I keep track of my progress?
Each ITS staff member who participates in this program will be required to keep a blog to track his or her progress to qualify for a new ITS shirt.
You will set up blogs as part of Exercise #4.
~Please make sure all of your blog posts are clear and contain substance or insights into what you've learned.~
I've seen the list of 23 Things on the website, but how do I know what to do with them?
Each week, two or three posts will be added to the Learning 2.0 with details about the discovery exercises for that week. The reason for this staggered approach is to allow participants the ability to focus each week on a different area without feeling overwhelmed. If you would like to work ahead, that is fine. However, please make sure that you check the exercises after the links are activated to insure that you are doing the correct "Things."
Do I have to do the exercises week by week?
No. Again, the reason for this staggered approach is to allow participants the ability to focus each week on a different area without feeling overwhelmed. I know that many folks have vacations scheduled over the summer. If you need to play "catch up," then by all means--please do!
Can I post comments on any of the Summer 2.0 blogs?
Yes!!! I hope that you will respond to the exercises not only on your own blogs, but by posting to the Summer 2.0 blogs as well. I will be moderating the comments before they are posted. While I realize that we are all professionals, this blog is accessible by anyone surfing the internet. It's a big world out there, and we are representative of the UVI community.
What if my question has not been addressed?
Please post your question as a comment, and I will respond to it ASAP.
